One way of thinking about teshuvah, is as a process of refinement moving towards self-perfection. Yet, for many, the very notion of perfection impedes self-improvement; every time we aim for perfection and fail, we come to doubt the very possibility of improvement.

What role can perfection play in the process of teshuvah, and especially during this season of repentance? Is it possible to latch on to the goal of perfection without falling victim to its discouraging effects?
