The ANNE F. and JULIUS SCHLEZINGER MEMORIAL LAW DAY LECTURE

Sunday, May 1, 2022 30 Nisan 5782

10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

IS TODAY’S CAMPUS CLIMATE SAFE FOR JEWS?

This year’s Ohr Kodesh Schlezinger Law Day Lecture will feature special guest Alyza Lewin, a leading voice in the fight against antisemitism on college campuses.  Ms. Lewin will address the problems Jewish students and faculty are currently experiencing and how to use the law to protect members of the Jewish community on campus and beyond.

Alyza Lewin is the President of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights under Law, a non-profit civil rights organization that engages in legal advocacy, research and education to combat antisemitism. The organization represents students and faculty who have been victimized by antisemitism and anti-Zionism.

Ms. Lewin was awarded the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists Distinguished Pursuit of Justice Award in January 2020 for her impressive legal accomplishments. In 2014, Ms. Lewin argued Zivotofsky vs Kerry before the US Supreme Court, paving the way for U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

In 2020, she succeeded in securing for American citizens born in Jerusalem the right to list Israel as their place of birth on their U.S. passports. Ms. Lewin represented the Boim family in its landmark civil tort litigation which established the right of American victims of terror to obtain damages under American law against organizations that knowingly provide financial support for international terrorism. Recently, she filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ben & Jerry’s Israeli licensee to prevent Ben & Jerry’s and Unilever from terminating his license and boycotting Israel. Join what will be a highly informative and inspiring talk. There will be ample time for questions.

Ms. Lewin is the past president of the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists (“AAJLJ”) and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Relations Council (“JCRC”) of Greater Washington and the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
