Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue and Other Lessons for           American Self-Governance

Phil Weiser,  Colorado Attorney General

Annual Law Day Lecture in memory of Anne F. and Julius Schlezinger, z'l.

In his talk, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser will discuss how the Torah’s call on us to “justice, justice you shall pursue” bears on the challenges we face as Americans.  At a time of great polarization, and even demonization of those with views different from us, the American project of “e pluribus umum—from many, one” is more challenging than ever.  The call to justice is also a call for empathy and humility, asking us to build relationships and learn from one another.  By each of us doing our part, we can advance this Torah value and the core project of American governance of working towards a more perfect union.

Philip Jacob Weiser was elected Attorney General for the State of Colorado in the 2018 election, becoming the first Democratic Colorado Attorney General in 15 years. He is the Hatfield Professor of Law and Telecommunications, Executive Director and Founder of the Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship, and Dean Emeritus at the University of Colorado Law School. He previously served in the Obama and Clinton Administrations in the White House and Justice Department.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College with high honors, and a J.D. degree from the New York University School of Law, with Order of the Coif honors, where he was an Articles Editor for the New York University Law Review.

Weiser is one of two sons born to a Holocaust survivor who came to the United States at a young age. His mother was born in a German concentration camp before coming to the United States at age six.  He is married with two children.
