The fast day of Shiv’ah Asar B’Tammuz (the 17th of Tammuz) commemorates calamities in Jewish history, according to Mishnah (Ta’anit chapter 4, which includes the breaking of the first set of tablets and the breaching of Jerusalem’s walls by the Babylonians. Shiv’ah-Asar B’Tammuz, is a dawn to nightfall fast. In years when the 17th of Tammuz coincides with Shabbat, the observance is pushed to Sunday.
