6-12th Graders and Families Social Action Project - Homes Not Borders

Sunday, June 2, 2024 25 Iyyar 5784

9:30 AM - 2:30 PMTBD

HOMES NOT BORDERS provides refugees with what they need to thrive and feel at home in the DC area. This community service project is for teens and their families (we need drivers!). If an adult is not able to drive, that's okay too as we will coordinate carpools.

THE PROJECT: Meet in Landover, MD at the Homes Not Borders warehouse to load the truck and cars. We'll caravan to the apartment (location announced a few days prior to project date), unload, and set up the apartment. Warehouse and apartment addresses will be emailed directly to volunteers.

We'd appreciate as many hours as you can offer. We hope some will stay the whole time, but we understand life is full of commitments. Please indicate the hours you'd plan to attend so we can plan accordingly.

Elan and Lior Zucker will be coordinating this project and following up with you. Please email the Director of Lifelong Learning, Rabbi Batya Glazer at rabbiglazer@ohrkodesh.org to have your interest forwarded to them. For questions, please write "Elan and Lior Zucker" in the subject. All participants will need to sign THIS liability waiver to participate.

What should I expect?
Come ready to carry and/or assemble furniture, wash dishes, hang pictures and decorate a home. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes that you can work in and that are weather appropriate. Each home set-up is a unique experience so be prepared to be flexible, work hard, and have fun.

How much weight do I need to be able to lift?
We have a variety of jobs during the setup, so if you can’t lift heavy objects, then you can work on getting the kitchen ready or setting up the beds.

What do I need to bring?
Bring plenty of water, a snack, and your volunteer liability waiver if you haven't already submitted it (attached). Depending on the weather, you may want to bring a hat, sunscreen, raincoat, etc. Some volunteers like to bring their tool kits (drills, picture-hanging stuff, hammers, etc) or work gloves, but that is up to you.
