Communal Day of Mourning

Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, is the communal day of mourning in the Jewish calendar

According to Mishnah Ta'anit chapter 4, among the calamities on Tisha B'Av were the decree that the Israelites would have to wander 40 years in the wilderness and the destruction of the First and Second Temples.

On Tisha B'Av, the same restrictions that apply on Yom Kippur - no eating or drinking, no washing, no anointing, no wearing of leather shoes, and no sexual relations - apply, and they apply from sundown to nightfall.
