Ohr Kodesh Book Club

The Ohr Kodesh Book Club meets monthly on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon at Ohr Kodesh (in the Salzberg Family Library).

Books selections are chosen by the club's members, alternating fiction and non-fiction every other month, and are generally limited to books no longer than 400 pages in length. New participants will be welcomed!

Led by Rabbi Lyle Fishman each Sunday, the class uses the Hebrew text of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz and discusses the material in English, and thereby investigates the thinking of the Rabbis of the Mishnah and Talmud (200 BCE-500 CE). New students are welcome.

HAZAK: Lunch and Learn: “The Best Chanukah Gift Ever”

Hazak will host the Jewish Genealogy Society of Washington (JGSW) to help each of us with tools to be able to tell our stories to our children and grandchildren.  Our first speaker will be Sheila Wexler, President of the JGSW, presenting Tracing Your Jewish Roots. It includes getting started, resources online, and DNA testing. The speaker will discuss her own genealogy experience followed by brief information about JGSGW.  “Getting Started in Jewish Genealogy" (published by Avotaynu) will be available for purchase for $15 to non-JGSGW members.

Talmud Class - Masechet Shabbat

Instructor: Richard Friedman

This class focuses on the text of the Talmud -- what it says and how it says it. Discussions are lively, and range from legal details to the theology of commandments.  All questions are fair; no belief is assumed except that study of Torah is worthwhile.  Texts are in Hebrew/Aramaic and English.  Participants include people who have studied Talmud before and people who have not.
